Oppo Reaffirms Commitment to Smartphone Photography Innovation Through Hasselblad Partnership
By ai / 6 August 2025
Oppo appears to be doubling down on its efforts to push the boundaries of smartphone photography with its Find X series, particularly the recently launched Find X8 Ultra. While the device is yet to go on sale globally, early reviews and testing indicate major improvements in camera performance, especially under low-light conditions. The Find X8 Ultra features upgraded telephoto lenses and better utilisation of its fifth rear-facing sensor, known as the True Chroma camera. The improvements aim to deliver brighter, more colour-accurate images in challenging lighting. These enhancements are partly credited to Oppo’s ongoing collaboration with Swedish camera brand Hasselblad, which has played a key role in shaping the brand’s flagship photography systems. At a recent event, Oppo officially announced its continued partnership with Hasselblad. Lu ChengHao, Photography Product Specialist at Oppo, took the stage to showcase the evolution of the Find X series and highlight major imaging milestones. During his presentation, ChengHao drew comparisons with competing brands, asserting Oppo’s positioning in the premium photography segment. Following the event, ChengHao addressed questions about whether the innovations seen in the Find X8 Ultra would trickle down to more accessible models. He confirmed that while hardware differentiation would remain between flagship and mid-range lines, Oppo is developing its own camera algorithms to enhance photography across its lineup. “In this self-developed algorithm, we can control the whole pipeline with precise global tone-mapping and local tone-mapping. And this technology is our key technology,” ChengHao explained. However, he clarified that the Reno series and other mainstream Oppo devices will not benefit directly from the Hasselblad collaboration, keeping the partnership exclusive to premium models like the Find X series. Meanwhile, several competing Chinese smartphone manufacturers have already introduced photography kits to accompany their Ultra flagship models. Xiaomi’s 15 Ultra, available in India, debuted with a specialised case offering manual camera controls and a built-in 2,000mAh battery pack. Vivo’s X200 Ultra, although not launched in India, took things further through its tie-up with Zeiss, enabling a clip-on physical zoom lens. This lens could be mounted onto a PGYTech accessory case, allowing for advanced telephoto imaging capabilities typically out of reach for most smartphones. With Oppo currently being the only major brand that hasn’t released a similar photography kit, ChengHao was asked whether the company is exploring such hardware accessories for its flagships. It’s worth noting that Oppo’s last Find X series launch in India was in 2020. Since then, the brand has not introduced any of the newer Find X flagships, including the Find X8 Ultra, to the Indian market. This limited availability continues to raise questions about when or if Oppo plans to bring its most advanced camera technology to wider audiences. As Oppo continues to invest in imaging R&D and refine its software pipeline, the industry will be watching closely to see how its flagship camera innovations evolve — and whether they become more widely accessible in the near future.
